FASHION IN PRAXIS CITY
A variety of costume exists in Praxis City. For example, Tool wears leather trousers, white cotton shirt and ragged wool cloak, and Kemeye Ben wears layered Kashani silk-cotton vests and robes. The following is what is most commonly seen on the streets of Praxis City.
Cloaks and robes are common, especially among the wizards, clerics, older women, and monks.
The standard Merchant, or Gentlemen garb:
White linen shirt, open and large sleeves. Tucked into breeches.
Cravat - neckcloth, usually ruffled
Waistcoat - basically a long vest with buttons along the front.
Breeches - well-fit pants from waist to knee
Coats - close-cut, knee-length. Cut narrow to shoulders and sleeves are narrowly fit. The more embroidering, the higher the status.
Stockings - white coverings for the leg and foot, knit mostly of silk, cotton, linen, and wool
Shoes had straight soles, no difference between left or right until shaped by wearer's feet. Shoe buckles were both functional and decorative
A cane or walking stick is a common accessory.
Hats vary from the three-point hat to the robin-hood style (or elven) hat. Feathers are popular adornments, ranging from the ostrich feather in the more flamboyant, to the more tasteful pheasant feathers in the elven hats. Owlbear feathers are gaining in popularity and price as well.
A man's suit consists of a coat, waistcoat, and breeches. The coat and breeches were often made of matching material. The waistcoat was frequently the most decorative part of the costume.
Gnomes wear the same as Gentleman's and Ladies garb, but are famous for their proclivity to wooden shoes.
The Nobles wear the finest costumes of course, very similar to the garb of a Gentleman, but usually much more adorned, garish, make ample use of silk. Nobles wore short wigs, known as bob wigs, of dyed white horse or human hair. Some were these only to official functions, but some - like Lord Adolfo Dor - wears his constantly in public, as a sign of status.
Ladies Gown:
Cap - usually cotton or linen, variety of sizes, shapes, and adornments
Necklaces, ribbons, and ruffs around the neck
Bodice - the upper part of the gown, attached to the shirt around the waistline
Gown - outer dress with ruffled sleeves
Petticoat - skirt or skirts beneath the gown. Often stuffed with wool in the winter.
Women's undergarments
Shifts - innermost garment, usually has drawstrings at neck and sleeves
Stay - like a small corset, made of whalebone, metal, or wood.
Hoops - only worn to formal events; spread out the dress. Also a source of inner pockets.
Stockings - white coverings for the leg and foot, knit mostly of silk, cotton, linen, and wool. Secured by ribbons at the knees.
Shoes - made of silks, worsteds, and leathers. Some are delicate and some are good quality. The leather was from young goats, and the shoes had points on the toes.
Middle class women wore simple, cotton clothes, although they indulge in the occasional calico gown, and may have a more formal gown for Festivals. Indentured servants and lower class women wear the same, although usually of even cheaper make, and of course rarely have a formal gown. Wealthy women wore pretty gowns made of expensive material. Fancy gowns had a bodice on the upper part. The bottom part had two skirts, a petticoat underneath and an overskirt on top. The petticoat was stuffed with wool in the winter
Northlanders and Traders favor fur. The Northlander garb consists of trousers, undertunic, overtunic, coat, cloak, and accessories. Most Northlander clothes are made of worsted wool, expertly weaved and dyed in bright colors, with preferences to blues and greens. Large leather belts are a Northlander stable, and fur hats are common. Northlander females tend to wear dresses that are relatively fitted and have long droopy sleeves
Indentured Servants (and most Folke)
Livery jackets of brown cotton velvet signify one is in the service of another.
Half-orcs
Most Half-Orcs are clothed in burlap-like material called hemp. This is cheap and easy to find on the market A few dress in wool or leather pants and cotton shirts, with usually open sleeves. Half-Orc women commonly decorate their outfits with charms and bits of ribbons. . Half-orcs that work "in the big houses" are given hand-me-down clothes from the owner's family. Most Half-Orcs are barefoot, and tattoos are quite common.
