FOLKE
The initial concept of Folke was to take the different literary versions of little people (such as hobbits, halflings, and kender), and instill them a strong "salt of the earth" quality. They represent misconceived images of the early Scotch-Irish immigrants, the modern day "red-necks," and the "seljaks" of Macedonia culture, allowing writers to explore the truth and fable around the "country hick." From Hollywood, we constantly see a misrepresentation of rural-dwellers in a familiar spectrum that ranges from ignorant, inbreeding idiots to backwoods psychopaths. For the sake of the Doom Lounge Writing Project, the Folke were designed on the lighter end of the continuum.
Therefore, Folke are commonly looked at by the humans in Praxis City as harmless, dirty, grubby, illiterate backwards country bumpkins, who are useful for their produce and fine pipe tobacco. By making them the short people, it is a literal extension of "those we look down upon."
Following the stereotype to its logical conclusion, Folke are an unrefined, superstitious bunch, known for their love of a large meal, a pipeful of tobacco, and a good yarn. Although by reputation hard workers, they are often characterized as living in squalor and ignorance, and giving to excesses, especially their hard jack. Although they have adopted the Trugod faith as their own, they still keep many of their formerly druidic habits they had under their previous worship of the Earthmother, including their seasonal festivals. Their many superstitions include consulting the almanac closely to determine when to plant peas, talking the fire out of pain, throwing spilt salt over the shoulder, leaving a cup of cider on the doorstep to welcome good spirits and placate bad ones, and the list goes on and on. Every occasion, good or bad, requires the delivery of a covered dish to the celebrating or ailing family. Folke wakes and funerals are the stuff of legends. They are famed as well for their storytellers, as oral tradition and song are an integral part of Folke culture. Folke bards are therefore highly treasured by Folke and non-Folke alike.
Folkes are clannish. It is common for Folke to live grow up with first, second, and third cousins. Folke think of their own social hierarchy to be similar to that of the humans, with two noble houses as proof of their rise in social stature. The Trueberry and the Umbertoes are at the top of their society, with the poorest clans, Hardwalker and the Hayseeds, at the bottom. "You might be a Hayseed if your uncle's your father" type of joke is growing even popular among the Folke themselves (except of course for the Hayseeds, who tell themselves everyone is referring to one of their many cousins instead of their entire clan). The most populous Folke clans in and around Praxis City are: Bluecobbler, Bottom, Budge, Cobblepot, Greenweed, Hardwalker, Hayseed, Lightfoot, those pretentious Poppycocks, Rightknot, Straightaway, Tealeaf, Trueberry, Turnipseed, Umbertoe, and Underhill.
Around the colony, Folke either live in the City Walls or outside in an enclave known as Millshire. The town Folke are laundry workers, house servants, couriers, custom officials, and a few minor merchants. There are also a few Folke that serve in the Town Watch as "scouts," since their small size implies they would be unlikely to break up a brawl of any sort. Folke artisans specialize in the crafts were smaller fingers mean greater detail, such as cobblers and weavers.
Outside the city walls, Millshire was established for the mutual protection of Folke. Although a few scattered farms are outside this plantation-size settlement, a wooden palisade houses the houses of farmers and a fair collection of mills on the Acheron River, on the opposite side of the peninsula where Praxis City is built. The farmers raise wheat, tobacco, peanuts, apples (and cider!), goats, and a wide assortment of produce. Millshire Folke tend to be more distrustful of strangers than Town Folke.
There are other types of Folke, though. Gypsy Folke are rare in Praxis. They are from Oruphe originally, although they have displaced all over the Seven Kingdoms, until some have naturally collected in the colonies. Gyspy Folke are more nomadic and less agricultural than the standard Shire Folke. They have darker skin, are may have some adept or sorcerer's skill. They are rumored to be followers of Bast, with the occasional were-cat in their midst, and are therefore not completely welcome in most Trugod-fearing (Earthmother remembering) Folke communities. Gyspy folke are also prone to become entertainers (and rogues) and have recently established a small enclave called Carnival near the northern colony Roanoke.
In the Wild Lands, there are rumors of native Folke called Wildlings, some of which may be cannibals. Most sages agree that these tales come from Folke mothers scaring their children to stay in bed and quit misbehaving. The recent accounts by smuggler Zek Stark of a "small Folke-like tribe of hairy, primitive cannibals" on Jerren Island off the coast of the Glith Province of Oristo have largely been viewed coming from an less than credible source.
