HALF-ORCS
Half-Orcs, most commonly referred to as Breed
Breed in Praxis City are descended from Half-Orc parents. Generations ago, Orc hordes invaded the Homelands, leaving many Half-Orc orphans. Under the guidance of Thranos, the orphans were gathered, and trained as warriors to defend against future invasions of the Homelands.
There is great prejudice against Breed, who are widely regarded as animals. Breed tend to be segregated into their own communities, and tolerated as a necessary nuisance and lower-class in most human communities. Their warlike tendencies, quickness to anger, and beast-like appearance adds to the justification of those who make laws to ensure the Breed mind their curfews, stay isolated in the Orc Quarter while they are in the City, carry work permits when they work outside the Quarter. It is also against the law to teach a Breed how to read, in fear it would only help spread an uprising. Breed are very much the second-class citizen, a slave in all but by name.
With a fear of over-population, many of them were sent to the colonies. In Praxis, they do manual labor, work as longshoremen, and are used occasionally as guards by merchants who can't afford the going rate of a human or dwarf. Many opt to work on the Farm Lands, and they are used as a buffer, protecting the north part of the peninsula against Ogre incursions. While some are boar farmers, many more work in the Rice Plantations at the southern tip of the peninsula for minimum wages.
Crime is high in the squalor of the Orc Quarter, and violence seems everyday. The only Breed-owned business establishments are the Orc Cafe, Eddie's Tattoo Shop, and a bar called Hell's Belles that is best avoided by all. A guard named Bone is trying to organize a Breed Guild of Mercenaries, but is meeting staunch resistance in the Town Council. They argue that Breed are not allowed to carry weapons unless on guard duty, and allowing them to arm and gather is just one more step closer to insurrection. As a result of this failed legislative attempt, a secret society called the Scarlet Brotherhood has risen to regulate the Orcs. Many suspect the outspoken Breed opponent House of Dor to be a supporter of the Brotherhood, at least in spirit if not by funding and membership, but no connections more solid than rhetoric have linked the House with the group, to date.
Although it is forbidden, Breed did bring some of their ancestral traditions with them. These hoodoo mystics are known as Root Doctors, and very respected/feared throughout the community.
Famous Breed include Emen and Rybet, two members of the Praxis Regiment and the only known Orcs to earn the coveted Servant of the Dragon award. Infamous orcs are much more popular, as the Warclaw Gang keeps their own sort of order in the Orc Quarter. A dark being known only as Croft as a criminal leader of sorts.
Breed society is largely matriarchal, although fractured by nature. The mother rules the house, without question.
Orcs usually get named by other Breed , and that name can change many times over the course of their lifetimes, according to their deeds. Common Orc names include Stinkeye, Booger, Longtooth, Ratkicker, Bite, Doodoo Brown, Elf Breath, Irontusk, and other similar creative but rarely complementary names.
