HUMANS IN CHICORA
Humans in Chicora fall into several categories.
Gaian -- the most common Humans in the colonies. Those from the Old World, or continent of Gaia, fall into the Seven Kingdoms, including Augian, Cadessi. The Kingdom of Aug is a rough representation of England, and Cadessi France., and Massina.is Germany/Italian mix, with a Rome-like history. Esani is Spain, but with a twist. Instead of the Moorish influence of Muslims, this world's Spain was influenced by a Persian invasion, So while Aug, Cadessi, and Massina are all of the One Church, Esani follow the Path of the Prophet, inspired by the Avesta. Think of Gaians as your typical European, and Esani as more brown-skinned, brown-eyed. They are also experts at horse riding, and bring exotic traditions like wind dancing. It is the Gaian kingdoms that own the colonies. Aug is the parent kingdom of Praxis City and Roanaoke, while Esani has Augustine. The Cadessi have a colony or two, but mostly concentrate on trading with the native humans instead of expanding colonization. All Gaians speak the language of their kingdom. "Common" in Praxis means you can speak Augish.
Northlanders -- large, blonde-hair, blue-eyed, pale skin. Think Viking. The Northlanders live in the frigid Dragon Tooth Mountain range, co-existing with the Dwarves, even to the point of sharing a religion and language. The Northlanders are most commonly mercenaries in the colonies, although some have settlements of their own in Vinland, the Northern part of the colonies. In the Northlands, a young man was supposed to hunt the white dire wolf as a passage to manhood. With the white dire wolf hunted to near extinction, many Northlander ends up in the colonies, hiring out their superior fighting ability for pay and honor. Northlanders are typically barbarians, warriors, and fighters, but are almost never wizards, sharing the Dwarven distrust of magic - except when it comes to an enchanted battle-axe, for example. The Danger Guild in Praxis finds work for any Northlander willing to hire out his blade. Northlanders are not ruled by dragons.
Native humans -- Like Native American, but with a strong inclination to lycanthropy. The different tribes are loosely confederated, usually answering to a council ruled by the dominant tribe. The Cacicans, the main trading partner with the colonists, follow the wolf totem. The Cawcaw, who now have dominance, follow the Crow Totem. Other prominent totems include the Bison, the Swamp Cat, and the Boar (enemies to the Wolf). The Snake Totem - the Yamassee - left the confederation for an alliance with the Glith many generations ago. Although nominally allies, their access to the colonies are restricted, as are their access to advanced weapons of the colonists. These restrictions, and unethical traders often strain relationship between the Native Humans and the colonists. Also, native humans typically don't have prejudice to the Half-Orcs, and a few Half-Orcs have joined them, may of them escaping criminal charges. They are referred to as Maroons.
Zheng He -- A mysterious, zenophobic Eastern country, their colonies supposedly predate even the Vinland's settlements into the Wild Lands. Although none of their colonies have been discovered to date, they are rumored to exist in hidden places, waiting for commands from the Black Dragon that has forgotten about them. They are legendary as fierce fighters, desiring to kill themselves before they let themselves be taken prisoner. Of course, they may be just merely the tales of sailors.
