A BRIEF INTRODUCTION TO THE WORLD OF MAGIC

Magic as it pertains to the world of the Doom Lounge, is intrinsically linked with religion. Magic can be broken into two all-encompassing types - Low, or natural magic, and High, or ethereal magic.

Low (Natural) Magic (Including Alchemists; Chemists; Summoners; Diviners; Mediums; Wailers; Oracles; Magi; Seers; Wizards)

Low or natural magic can best be defined as magic that draws upon the natural world. It can be divided into several sub-classes as follows:

Alchemy - the chemical science and sorcerous philosophy whose aims are the transmutation of the base metals into gold, and the discovery of a universal cure for disease, and the discovery of a means of indefinitely prolonging life. Alchemy is practiced by alchemists, and by sorcerers. Those who claim mastery over its secrets are known as 'Illuminated Ones' and are considered to be the most powerful mortal sorcerers on earth. A subset of alchemy is chemistry. Chemists are medicinal healers who provide potions and cures for various ailments. Notable Alchemists and Chemists in Praxis include Mister Moneybags, the proprietor of a notorious opium den in the Alley district. Though a Bonecaster, Hilien Quit applies her skills as a chemist in the mixing and making of various potions. Alchemy is an aspect of magic practiced by the Oruphe Kemeye Ben as well.

Spellcasting - charming, incantations and magic signs that protect against adverse influence. Spells are crafted by drawing upon the natural and supernatural energies of the physical world and are invoked using elements of organic nature (i.e. sticks and stones, tea leaves, water, fire, wind, etc.) Spellcasting can be further divided into three classes: (1) Summoning - Summoners, dependant on skill level, can call upon demons such as golems and doppelgangers. They can summon and manipulate the dead. (2) Divination - Diviners can determine the fate of those they 'read'. (3) Mediumship - Mediums can communicate non-verbally with the dead, or with other living beings. Spellcasting is practiced by Wizards, Spellcasters, Shaman, Diviners, Summoners, Mediums and those who possess the knowledge and the skill to manipulate earthly magic. Tools employed by the Spellcaster include, talismanic magic, casting of tea leaves, runes and sticks, and astral projection. Notable Spellcasters in Praxis include Del Rook and Kemeye Ben.

Bonecasting - charming, incantations and magic signs that protect against adverse influence. Spells are crafted by drawing upon the natural and supernatural energies of the physical world and are invoked using freshly spilt blood. The higher the source of the blood, the more powerful the spell. For example, human blood would make a spell far more potent than the blood of a field mouse. Bonecasting can be further divided into three classes: (1) Wailing - Wailers, dependant on skill level, can call upon demons such as golems and doppelgangers. They can summon and manipulate the dead. (2) Necromancy - Necromancers communicate with the spirits of the dead in order to predict the future. (3) Mediumship - Mediums can communicate non-verbally with the dead, or with other living beings. Unlike Spellcasting Mediums, Bonecasting Mediums surrender control of their bodies to the spirits of the dead for a pre-determined period of time. Bonecasting is practiced by Wizards, Bonecasters, Dark Shaman, Wailers, Necromancers, Mediums and those who possess the knowledge and the skill to manipulate earthly magic. Tools employed by the Bonecaster include talismanic magic, casting of bones, the drawing of blood runes and astral projection. Notable Bonecasters in Praxis include Hilien Quit, Laelinidia (Lianna Tisdale), Kemeye Ben and Timisin Blight

Talismanic Magic - A Talisman is an object marked with magic signs which confer on its bearer supernatural powers or protection. While Talismanic powers can be employed by anyone, the objects themselves are crafted by Spellcasters or Bonecasters. Notable examples of Talismanic magic are Athena's amulet (A gift from Lianna Tisdale), Kemeye Ben's Ascension Amulet, and Tool's demonic sword Fenris. A subset of Talismanic magic is Oral (or verbal) Magic. Similar to Talismanic magic accept that rather than objects, words themselves have been laced with magic and, when uttered by the individual for whom they were crafted, obtain a specific result. For example, when Tool utters the ancient Kashani word for 'Darkness' he can blend with, and even manipulate, the shadows. He cannot change this spell, nor can he craft his own. Tool is merely a 'user' of magic, or a Mage.

High (Ethereal) Magic (Including Entities; Elder Gods; Angels; Fallen Angels; Saints; Ascended Sorcerers; Illuminated Sorcerers; Sorcerers)

High or ethereal magic can best be defined as magic that draws upon the mysterious energies of the Higher Realms. It can be divided into several sub-classes as follows:

Entities - there are two Entities - Light and Darkness - from which all magic originates. Whether consciously or not, all living things serve either one or the other. Few are aware that these exist as anything more than ideologies. The ancient Oruphe worshiped a God of Light and a God of Darkness. It is not yet known whether these two deities represent the twin Entities of Light and Darkness. The Elder races (dwarves, elves, dragons and breed) believe the Mad God to be the Oruphe God of Darkness and not the Entity known as Darkness, but nobody knows for sure.

Elder Gods - High Realm beings once worshipped as gods by the Elder races. Included amongst the Elder gods are the pantheonic gods of the Kashani, the Mythosians, the Northlandic and others. The Elder Gods live amongst High Magic. They are bound to it and within it. They do not need to 'cast' or whisper enchantments in order to employ its power because it is a natural part of their being. The One True God would be a notable example of an Elder God.

Angels - winged servants of the Elder Gods, most commonly referred to within the context of the One True God they also include minor gods of the pantheonic religions.

Fallen Angels - winged servants of the Elder Gods. Before the dawn of the Elder races, angels ruled the earth. The Fallen sought to reclaim their world, and in doing so defied the Elder Gods. As a result they were banished, imprisoned in the Abyss for all time. Still there, they constantly seek a means of reclaiming their lost place within the Higher Realms. The most notable example of a Fallen One is Murmur.

Saints - Saints were once mortal beings, members of the Elder Races who were granted special favor by the Elder Gods for tasks they performed during life. Saints can be invoked by mortals of their own race for various reasons, including protection. Notable examples of Saints in Praxis are Antiochus, Patron Saint of the Dead and Dying and Saint Kord.

Ascended Ones - Ascendants are sorcerers who have gained immortality and access to the Higher Realms through alchemical means. Ascendants can travel between realms at will, can manipulate High Magic and cannot be killed by mortal means. They are often mistaken for Saints, garnering the title 'False Saints'. Notable examples of Ascended Ones in Praxis are Providence (Johanna Vorsehung) and Agunapalgosanigor.

Illuminated Ones - Considered the most powerful mortal sorcerers, Illuminated Ones have become masters of the alchemical arts. They are on the verge of Ascension, but cannot do so until they understand the full breadth of ancient knowledge their skills have exposed them to. Illuminated Ones in Praxis include Laelinidia (Lianna Tisdale) and Kemeye Ben.

Sorcerers - Sorcerers are practitioners of High Magic. They employ all aspects of magic in the crafting of their spells. Sorcerers are Bonecasters, Spellcasters and Master Alchemists. Sorcery is not a learned art, but a natural one. Only those born with the ability to manipulate High Magic can be Sorcerers, but Sorcerers can begin as Bonecasters, Spellcasters or Alchemists.
