RUDOLF CHRISTIAN SINNER

Name: Christian (Rudolf Christian Sinner)

Physical Description: Christian is a tall, slender young man with an athletic build. He is considered quite handsome. He is in his early twenties, with a youthful, unblemished complexion. He wears his black hair cut relatively short in the style of the Seven Cities.1 He has dark blue eyes and a deep, almost brooding, gaze. He dresses well; rich fabrics that reflect his noble background. He wears a ring on his left hand which bears the symbol of the Order of the Death's Head - two runic letters beneath a skull.2 He bears the tattoo of a cross between his shoulder blades. It is an Oruphe3 'glyph' - a symbol laced with the dark sorceries of that race, placed there at the time of his birth by an enigmatic man known as Heinrich Hess.4

Christian carries with him a pair of scars, one on his back and one on his chest, which he earned while duelling in the city of Kashan. This scar is in exactly the same spot as the scar that Tool received as a result of his encounter with Regan Mudd.5

Christian wields a six-foot broadsword he calls 'Song of Roland'.6 This blade serves as home to three Shadowdemons; Asatoma Sadgamaya, Tamasoma Jyoti Gamaya and Myrityoma Amritam Gamaya.7 He carries this sword in an ornate leather sheath he keeps strapped to his back. When the demons are within that sword, it can be seen as a swirling mix of silver and black. When they are called out, the sword is a solid silver colour.

Personality: Christian considers himself a pragmatist. He has little patience when it comes to faith, and less when it comes to doubt and hesitation. He is very decision/action oriented, a natural problem solver with a cool, calm and collected approach to dealing with crisis. He is generally unflappable, responds well to the unexpected and has an extremely long fuse.

He is a trained observer, his work as a 'Jagd-Kommando' for the Army of Barin Ginor has given him an almost innate ability to assess any given situation/environment for potential problems. He is extremely intelligent, very well read with a strong passion for the written word. He also has a passion for the Kashani drink known as 'coffee'. Coffee is the second most exported good in Kashan (the first being opium). Christian is a note-taker, his strong writing skills lending to his passion for literature and history. He is constantly jotting down notes in his journals regarding the mysteries he has become embroiled in. He is also a writer of letters. He ends each day by writing two letters - one to his beloved Isoulde, and one to their four-year-old daughter Safiya, both of whom he has abandoned as a result of his military career.

Christian collects rare books and expensive wines. He currently has the largest collection of both in the New World.

Personal History: Christian was born in the City of the Seven Churches, a city that exists at the very heart of the Trugod faith. Situated in the scenic Wein Valley, Seven Churches gave Christian his passion for wine. He is Nobleborn - the son of an aristocratic General, Christian entered military service at sixteen. He trained as a cavalry officer before transferring into his current role as an Intelligencer - a 'Jagd-Kommando' employed behind enemy lines and in distant lands to gather intelligence on enemy strengths, weaknesses and individuals.

Appointed to the Seven Churches Regiment as a regimental clerk, he began his training as an Intelligencer under the command of a man named Jonathan Tullamore. The two quickly became friends, sharing a common love of literature and wine. At seventeen he met and fell in love with Isoulde von Krupp, the youngest daughter of his commanding officer, General Werner von Krupp. Though he was only seventeen, and she sixteen, the two were married less than three months later.

Isoulde gave birth to a daughter, whom they named Safiya.8 Soon after her birth; Christian and Jonathan Tullamore were sent to Kashan to assess reports that the Hashisham-Kashani had been committing genocide against the Oruphe within Kashan and neighbouring Oru. Following a series of dark and disturbing events Christian found himself in the city of Kashan, where he remained for the next two years wallowing in opium and self-pity. It was during this time that he nearly met his death, stabbed through the heart while duelling with a member of the Hashisham.9

Saved by the rapid healing spells of a mage named Mustafa, Christian began to re-assess his life. He eventually returned to Seven Churches, and his regimental duties, but he could not bring himself to return to his wife and daughter. Events in Kashan and Oru had changed him.10

He became an adept in the secret Order of the Death's Head, a fraternal organization with dark and sinister origins. It was on their behalf, as well as in his role as a Jagd-Kommando that Christian set sail for Praxis. He had been sent by both to recover a sword known as the 'Song of Roland'. In truth that sword did not exist. The true 'Song of Roland' was the spell contained within the Oruphe glyph tattooed to his back. In short - HE was the Song of Roland.11

Christian learned this truth, but chose to remain in Praxis under the guise of searching for his missing brother, a Ramielite priest named Roland Sinner. Roland went missing following an encounter with Edgar Tully, and has not been seen since. He is presumed dead.

Soon after he arrived in Praxis, Christian began experiencing chronic nightmares. These nightmares involved a dark and terrifying force12 and a man he now knows as Edgar Tully. He also found himself with a strong sense of familiarity. Places like the Church of Saint Kord and the Doom Lounge were hauntingly familiar - far too familiar for someone who had never been to Praxis before. He felt a connection with Athena Fikaris, yet he could not explain why. During his search for the truth behind the Song of Roland he met three Shadowdemons. These demons were servants of the very Darkness that had been plaguing his dreams. That Darkness was, in fact, the soul of the Mad God Atankhanu. These demons explained that Atankhanu had chosen to work through Christian during the course of his war with so-called 'false' Ascendants.

Christian is still struggling to understand what any of this means. He does not trust Atankhanu or his motives, he does not intend to use the Shadowdemons within his sword without good reason, and he refuses to cooperate with the Ascendant known as Saint Providence. He is not sure what to make of the connection he has with Edgar, or with the mysterious historical figure known as Heinrich Hess. He has begun to question the motives of the secret order he belongs to. The only thing he is certain about is that Edgar's motives concerning Athena Fikaris are pure, and he will honour them. Regardless his personal opinions of Athena, he would die for her if necessary.

Christian currently resides at Gravesend Manor, an old mansion at the heart of the Noble's District.

Allies: Judah Wylde; Sin Esarran (best friend); Kemeye Ben; Hilien Quit; Meega Moon; Asatoma Sadgamaya; Tamasoma Jyoti Gamaya; Myrityoma Amritam Gamaya; Atankhanu; Saint Providence; Rezial

Enemies: Imisim Kest; Agunapalgosanigor; Lianna Tisdale; Krstin Krupp

Martial Skills: Christian is a military officer with extensive training as a cavalry officer and as an Intelligencer. The 'Jagd-Kommando' was designed to counter the Hashisham operating within Seven Cities, and throughout the known world. As such Christian has been trained in the use of a large number of single, paired, and projectile weapons. His weapon of choice is his broad or 'great' sword, though he has also been known to use paired short swords, and is considered a master with the pike. He is a strategist at heart however, and will employ his keen mind in combat, often outsmarting his opponents rather than out-duelling them. He is, by no means, a brilliant swordsman, but he is smart enough to know that and to look for ways to compensate when in a fight. His true skill as a soldier lies in his eye for tactics. While he is quite good at hand-to-hand combat, he has been trained to use any given situation to his advantage (i.e. to kill before he is seen, to avoid combat altogether if it is unnecessary or to leverage surprise as a means of dealing with an opponent.)

Magical Skills: While Christian does not possess the ability to use or manipulate magic, he does have three Shadowdemons at his disposal. These demons live within his sword and can be summoned by uttering their names with his sword drawn.

Notes:
1. The seven major cities of the so-called 'Old World' including Barin Ginor and Christian's birthplace, the City of the Seven Churches.
2. For those of you interested in the symbol, it is the rather sinister symbol of the SS-Totenkopfverbande (Death's Head unit) of the Nazi/German army during WWII. Their motto: My honour's name is loyalty. There is a connection between this far-too-real military order and my fantasy one, which will come to light during the development of Christian's back story.
3. The Oruphe, or the People of Oru, might very well be the first race of man in this world. Their origins are shrouded in mystery, but their powerful sorcerer-priests and sorcerer-kings gained fame during a great war with the Elder Races (the dwarves, elves, dragons and orcs) centuries ago. Some believe the Oruphe are NOT native to this realm, while others believe they are descendants of the Fallen.
4. Little is known about this pseudo-historical figure other than that he founded the secret Order of the Death's Head in Barin Ginor more than two-hundred years ago. His name can be found at different points in the history of the Seven Cities - even amongst a census of early settlers in Praxis. He is somehow the tie that binds Christian to Edgar and to a group of unique, yet somehow similar, men and women known as 'Midnight's Children'.
5. This event takes place in the story Way to Dusty Death (See the bio for Tool for more details).
6. The name Roland crops up in several different places. In this context it refers not to his brother Roland, but to King Roland I of Barin Ginor. King Roland was converted to the Trugod faith by Johanna Vorsehung, and with her led a great army against the 'pagan' Northlandic tribes. During the siege of Est he sought to satisfy his lust for Johanna. When she denied him, he conspired with an albino sorcerer named Faust to bring about her disgrace and downfall. He brought charges of heresy against her. That these charges were true was a strange coincidence. Johanna Vorsehung was burned at the stake in Seven Churches, yet ascended to the Higher Realms as Saint Providence. Roland failed to conquer the city of Est and within a year had contracted the plague known as Saint Vitus's Dance. He died a year to the day after Johanna's fiery ascension.
7. Of the three, Jyoti and Amritam are brother and sister. Asatoma Sadgamaya is Edgar Tully's soul. The meaning of the names is as follows:
¤ Asatoma Sadgamaya - From delusion lead me to Truth
¤ Tamasoma Jyoti Gamaya - From darkness lead me to Light
¤ Myrityoma Amritam Gamaya - From death lead me to Eternal Life
8. Safiya is the Kashani word for 'Beautiful Flower'.
9. The Brotherhood of the Mountain; a religious sect; assassins.
10. This will be explained as I develop Christian's back story. A hint to this past can be found in the story 'A Concurrence of Happenstance'
11. The Song of Roland is the name given to the Oruphe spell hidden within the cross tattooed to Christian's back. It is the stamp that links him to Atankhanu and was placed there by the mysterious Heinrich Hess.
